    Imagining Taiwan : the making and the museological representation of art in Taiwan's quest for identity (1987-2010)

    This thesis probes and analyses the critical role of art in the shaping of Taiwan's national identity during the period 1987-2010. With the rise of democratisation and national identity consciousness (bentu yishi), Taiwan's quest for national identity intensified after the lifting of martial law in 1987. The thesis challenges the view that art has played an inconsequential role in this identity discourse by demonstrating that artists, curators and art museums have significantly contributed towards the processes of identity formation, particularly during the peak period of the early-mid 1990s. Focusing on the nature and extent of the contribution of artists, curators and art museums to Taiwan's quest for identity, the thesis explores how national identity narratives were imagined, interpreted, projected and transmitted, nationally and internationally, through the production, selection and exhibition of art from Taiwan. Structurally, the thesis contextualizes each socio-political period, providing the backdrop for a series of case studies. These demonstrate how artists, curators and art museums became active agents in the processes of national identity formation, not only promoting but also critiquing and contesting identity narratives revolving around the concept of a 'Taiwan nation'. Given that national identities are relational and fluid constructs, the thesis reveals how identity discourses in art had diminished in significance by the early twenty-first century when globalisation, the rise of China, and art market forces transformed identity discourses in art from a Taiwan-centred narrative into one embracing not only regional and global perspectives but, most critically, dialogue and exchange with China

    Program evaluation of an adapted PEERSĀ® social skills program in young adults with autism spectrum disorder and/or mild intellectual impairment and social skills difficulties

    Rationale, Aims and Objectives: Social challenges are common for young adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or mild intellectual impairment, yet few evidence-based interventions exist to address these challenges. PEERSĀ®, the Program for the Education and Enrichment of Relational Skills, has been shown to be effective in improving the social skills of young adults with ASD; however, it requires a significant time commitment for parents of young adults. As such, this mixed-methods study aimed to investigate the experiences of young adults, parents and PEERSƂĀ® social coaches participating in an adapted PEERSƂĀ® program, and to evaluate its acceptability and efficacy. Method: Young adults with ASD and/or mild intellectual impairment participated in a 16-week PEERSĀ® program. Parents and PEERSĀ® social coaches attended fewer, condensed sessions, where they learnt program content to support the young adults' social skill development at home and in the community. Focus groups were conducted post intervention. Quantitative preāˆ’post assessment using the Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults, the Test of Young Adult Social Skills Knowledge, and Quality of Socialization Questionnaire-Young Adults was completed by young adults. The Social Responsiveness Scale Second Edition was completed by young adults and their parents. Result: Qualitative results revealed that, taken together, young adults, parents and PEERSƂĀ® social coaches all felt that the adapted PEERSĀ® program was ā€˜challenging, but worth itā€™. The program was acceptable with a 93%ƂĀ attendance rate across all sessions. Whilst young adults' perceptions of their own social functioning did not change post-intervention, their knowledge of social skills content improved significantly (p < 0.05). Parent perceptions of young adults' social responsiveness also improved (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Social skill knowledge, social responsiveness, and social engagement improved significantly following the completion of the adapted PEERSĀ® program. It was deemed acceptable and worthwhile by young adults, their parents and PEERSĀ® social coaches

    An Investigation Into the Role of Osteocalcin in Human Arterial Smooth Muscle Cell Calcification

    Ā© Copyright Ā© 2020 Millar, John, McIntyre, Ralevic, Anderson and O'Sullivan. Osteocalcin (OCN) is a bone-derived protein that is detected within human calcified vascular tissue. Calcification is particularly prevalent in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients but the role of OCN in calcification, whether active or passive, has not been elucidated. Part 1: The relationship between OCN, CKD and vascular calcification was assessed in CKD patients (n = 28) and age-matched controls (n = 19). Part 2: in vitro, we analyzed whether addition of uncarboxylated osteocalcin (ucOCN) influenced the rate or extent of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) calcification. Human aortic VSMCs were cultured in control media or mineralisation inducing media (MM) containing increased phosphate with or without ucOCN (10 or 30 ng/mL) for up to 21 days. Markers of osteogenic differentiation and calcification were determined [alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, total intracellular OCN, Runx2 expression, Ī±-SMA expression, alizarin red calcium staining, and calcium quantification]. Part 1 results: In our human population, calcification was present (mean age 76 years), but no differences were detected between CKD patients and controls. Plasma total OCN was increased in CKD patients compared to controls (14 vs. 9 ng/mL; p < 0.05) and correlated to estimated glomerular filtration rate (p < 0.05), however no relationship was detected between total OCN and calcification. Part 2 results: in vitro, ALP activity, Ī±-SMA expression and calcium concentrations were significantly increased in MM treated VSMCs at day 21, but no effect of ucOCN was observed. Cells treated with control media+ucOCN for 21 days did not show increases in ALP activity nor calcification. In summary, although plasma total OCN was increased in CKD patients, this study did not find a relationship between OCN and calcification in CKD and non-CKD patients, and found no in vitro evidence of an active role of ucOCN in vascular calcification as assessed over 21 days. ucOCN appears not to be a mediator of vascular calcification, but further investigation is warranted

    Reconciling drainage and receiving basin signatures of the Godavari River system

    The modern-day Godavari River transports large amounts of sediment (170ā€ÆTg per year) and terrestrial organic carbon (OC_(terr); 1.5ā€ÆTg per year) from peninsular India to the Bay of Bengal. The flux and nature of OC_(terr) is considered to have varied in response to past climate and human forcing. In order to delineate the provenance and nature of organic matter (OM) exported by the fluvial system and establish links to sedimentary records accumulating on its adjacent continental margin, the stable and radiogenic isotopic composition of bulk OC, abundance and distribution of long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs), sedimentological properties (e.g. grain size, mineral surface area, etc.) of fluvial (riverbed and riverbank) sediments and soils from the Godavari basin were analysed and these characteristics were compared to those of a sediment core retrieved from the continental slope depocenter. Results show that river sediments from the upper catchment exhibit higher total organic carbon (TOC) contents than those from the lower part of the basin. The general relationship between TOC and sedimentological parameters (i.e. mineral surface area and grain size) of the sediments suggests that sediment mineralogy, largely driven by provenance, plays an important role in the stabilization of OM during transport along the river axis, and in the preservation of OM exported by the Godavari to the Bay of Bengal. The stable carbon isotopic (Ī“^(13)C) characteristics of river sediments and soils indicate that the upper mainstream and its tributaries drain catchments exhibiting more ^(13)C enriched carbon than the lower stream, resulting from the regional vegetation gradient and/or net balance between the upper (C_4-dominated plants) and lower (C3-dominated plants) catchments. The radiocarbon contents of organic carbon (Ī”^(14)C_(OC)) in deep soils and eroding riverbanks suggests these are likely sources of old or pre-aged carbon to the Godavari River that increasingly dominates the late Holocene portion of the offshore sedimentary record. While changes in water flow and sediment transport resulting from recent dam construction have drastically impacted the flux, loci, and composition of OC exported from the modern Godavari basin, complicating reconciliation of modern-day river basin geochemistry with that recorded in continental margin sediments, such investigations provide important insights into climatic and anthropogenic controls on OC cycling and burial

    Participatory Development of a 3D Telemedicine system during Covid: the future of remote consultations

    Background: The Covid pandemic brought the need for more realistic remote consultations into focus. 2D telemedicine solutions fail to replicate the fluency or authenticity of in-person consultations. This research reports on an international collaboration on the participatory development and first validated clinical use of a novel, real-time 360-degree 3D Telemedicine system worldwide. Development of the system - leveraging Microsoft's HoloportationTM communication technology ā€“ commenced at Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit, Glasgow in March 2020. Methods: Research followed VR CORE guidelines on development of Digital Health trials, placing patients at the heart of the development process. This consisted of three separate studies - a clinician feedback study (23 clinicians, Nov-Dec 2020), a patient feedback study (26 patients, Jul-Oct 2021), and a cohort study focusing on safety and reliability (40 patients, Oct 2021 - Mar 2022). ā€œLose, Keep and Changeā€ feedback prompts were used to engage patients in the development process and guide incremental improvements. Results: Participatory testing demonstrated improved patient metrics with 3D in comparison to 2D Telemedicine, including validated measures of satisfaction (p&lt;0.0001), realism or ā€˜presenceā€™ (Single Item Presence scale, p&lt;0.0001), and quality (Telehealth Usability Questionnaire, p=0.0002). Safety and clinical concordance (95%) of 3D Telemedicine with a face-to-face consultation were equivalent or exceeded estimates for 2D Telemedicine. Conclusions: One of the ultimate goals of telemedicine is for the quality of remote consultations to get closer to the experience of face-to-face consultations. These data provide the first evidence that HoloportationTM communication technology brings 3D telemedicine closer to this goal than a 2D equivalent
